World War II Marine base and future site of the UC Santa Barbara campus: view of gymnasium and pool

adc_186_b4f2_18-k.jpg

Description

A photograph of the Marine base gymnasium building, with attached pool. This photograph also shows the lack of proper landscaping and grounds maintenance which plagued the early campus planners. Lack of topsoil (which the Marines had scraped off to fill the slough for the airport) revealed a sandy soil, which blew sand throughout the new campus. The building is currently used for office space, storage, art studios, and as shower facilities for the pool, which is used for water polo matches and community events.
