World War II Marine base and future site of the UC Santa Barbara campus: campus pool

adc_186_b4f2_06-k.jpg

Description

A view of the campus pool as it appeared before the Marine base was given to the University of California. The pool was used by the Marines to practice water landings and emergency parachute procedures; the jumping platform in the center of the photograph was converted to diving boards for the University. The old gym (Red Barn, Building 479) is in the background. After being converted to a co-educational facility, the gym was used for recreational activities for many years. The building is currently being used as overflow office space, and the original basketball court floor can still be seen in some of the rooms.
