Residence Hall #6 -- San Rafael Hall

A photograph of a model of San Rafael Hall. The placement of San Rafael Hall on the western edge of the campus, adjacent to Isla Vista, shows the expansion of the on-campus housing beyond the original residence hall cluster. The Carrillo Dining Commons was built (also by Charles Luckman Associates, 1967) adjacent to San Rafael. This residence hall was designed to have small clusters of students living in buildings designed to create small communities, each small section with their own study lounge and bathroom facilities. San Rafael was also designed as the first co-educational residence hall, with separate wings of the buildings for men and women. In addition to a new dining commons, recreational facilities were planned for the lagoon 'island' which included baseball, football, and soccer fields.
