Irving J. Gill: Barker house (San Diego, Calif.)

Gill used simplicity, symmetry and strategic asymmetry in his landscapes and buildings. Garden walls extend the building volume across the site, while also enclosing gardens and terraces.

In this series of drawings of graphite and gouache on board for the Nelson Barker house, the white planes of the house and garden walls stand out against the faintly-sketched backdrop.
